Is Survival Selfish
Do you believe people must be selfish in order to survive? This is the central question of this essay. Survival does not require people to behave selfishly because the key to survival is having purpose in a crisis; caring for others gives people purpose and people who survive live because they keep a cool head, not because they are selfish. Most survival stories prove that people have higher rates of survival when they have a purpose.
People who only think about themselves often die. Sometimes by helping others give people higher chance of survival. Laurence Gonzales writes, Doctors and nurses have a higher rate of survival than others because they have a purpose” (Gonzales 332). This proves that survival is not selfish because those who think of others actually survive more often than dying and being named a coward. Another example that supports this is that people who have been in a survival situations before make the best rescuers. People who have been in survival situations know what to do. “The best search and rescue professionals are people who have survived in a crisis” (Gonzales 334). Keaino is a great example of this. By focusing on others, he also survived. Not only is the key to survival is having purpose in a crisis but people who survive live because they keep a cool head, not because they are selfish.
People who survive live because they keep a cool head, not because they are selfish. If people just stay calm, they will survive because they will come up a plan. Helping others and staying calm can increase your chances of survival and helping others makes it easier to stay calm. “Help other people keeps people calm in a crisis” (Gonzales 331). Helping people during a fire or a huge storm you got to stay calm because you make it worse for you and maybe you get hurt. When police and fireman go to big situation, they need to stay calm because they could mess up the operation.
Keeping a good attitude has a huge part of surviving as well. Gonales explains that. “Having a Positive Mental Attitude is the number one thing that defines whether a person survives or dies; this is unrelated to looking after yourself first (Gonzales 332). This explains that survival is not selfish because people with a good attitude will make it through. Although it’s clear that survival is not selfish, not everyone agrees.
Some people argue that people shouldn’t assume they can save others, they should be selfish to ensure survival. This is wrong because Gonzales has proven that people who try to help other actually have higher rates of survival. So, it's obvious that survival is not selfish.
Because the key to survival is having purpose in a crisis and people who survive live because they keep a cool head, not because they are selfish, survival is not selfish.
